TOYOTA 1/X CONCEPT: Making its North American debut at the ’08 Chicago Auto Show, the Toyota 1/X concept derives its name from its vehicle mass, fuel consumption and emissions output, each totaling a fraction of that of other vehicles in its class. The ultra-light 1/X is a plug-in hybrid vehicle that can recharge on a 110v household current. It has a 0.5-liter engine that can run on bioethanol and/or gasoline. The result is a vehicle that could travel over 600 miles on a small four-gallon tank of fuel and achieve acceleration performance equal to the Prius. Having a 926-pound curb weight results from a body frame made of strong carbon fiber reinforced plastic, a roof produced from a bio-plastic, and four ultra-lightweight seats made of polyester fiber knitted three-dimensionally for added comfort. In consideration of pedestrians and oncoming traffic, the 1/X is equipped with non-glare headlights, and the front is dominated by an LED lighting system that sweeps under and across its large front windshield. Toyota states that the 1/X concept is one more example of it’s commitment to designing clean, safe and innovative vehicles
